Nice Article via the Medical Quack on Microsoft’s recent announcement that they plan to get into the Health Information Exchange biz. As many of you know, Electronic Health Records (EHR) are NOT the point behind the federal efforts in Health Information Technology. HIE is the point because it is the piece that will allow for better treatment and error and cost reduction. (Aside: Sorry all you pundits expounding on the ineffectiveness of EMRs. They are an enabling piece for HIE and that is the point behind the whole effort.)
This is a good thing, IMHO.
Microsoft’s entry into this area will allow robust and trusted software to be deployed easily. This is not to say that the federal NHINConnect software has been useless. It hasn’t. It just doesn’t have the cache that the MS brand does and this is important.
